Details

Within the faculty of Chemistry and Earth Sciences of the University of Heidelberg the Institute of Physical Chemistry (PCI) is a well-known centre for the application of laser diagnostics of chemical processes, biophotonics, surface and interface design and analysis, biophysical and theoretical chemistry.

The main research areas are:

·       laser-induced chemical processes and laser diagnostics of technical combustion and catalytical processes

·       single molecule spectroscopy of biological samples

·     dynamic regulation of adhesive contacts and of the cytoskeleton architecture of biological cells using novel micro- and nanostructured materials

·       design and advanced characterization of functional surfaces and interfaces

·       biocompatible coatings for biotechnology and medical applications

·       nanolithography and -technology

·       chemical and biochemical sensors

·       x-ray microscopy and holography

·       theoretical studies of the electronic structure and dynamics of molecules

·       theoretical investigations to reveal new phenomena in prototype neutral and charged molecular species

The undergraduate (bachelor) and graduate (masters and doctoral) teaching programs of the PCI provide intensive training on the most recent developments, techniques and applications in physical, biophysical and theoretical chemistry and prepare students for direct entry into competitive research and careers in science and industry.

The PCI currently hosts 20 research groups of which 8 are headed by tenured professors and the others by senior or junior group leaders providing young scientists early independence and responsibility. Altogether the PCI has more than 180 researchers and staff. The institute is tied up with numerous interdisciplinary and international co-operations in the areas of mathematics, scientific computing, physics, materials and life sciences documenting its multidisciplinary research activities. Many research topics are oriented towards practical application obvious from the great number of joint projects with industrial companies. Communication between the different partners is assured by regular meetings, colloquia and conferences.
