Awards

In March 2008 the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology awarded SciLife’s project plan an exclusive award for start-up projects (“Gründerwettbewerb" – Mit Multimedia erfolgreich starten”). Below you find the German Award Description.

100% Scientists!

Here at SciLife we are all real scientists. SciLife was created by an interdisciplinary group of PhD students from the life and computer sciences in Dresden, Lausanne and Heidelberg. Together with other researchers at the Max Planck Institute of Molecular Cell Biology and Genetics in Dresden we developed this platform to help the community in their daily scientific work. Because as researcher we know exactly what kind of obstacles scientists have to overcome, everyday. SciLife helps making your life a bit easier by connecting the dots, bringing people and their resources together and thus creating a map of scientific landscape. We truly believe that only scientists know what is best for scientists.

100% Accessible!

From the start, SciLife was developed to be a platform with high standards regarding accessibility: it is not always easy in a world where expression like Web 2.0 are buzzed around every corner. That's why we decided to create a platform where people with disabilities encounter as few obstacles as possible. Challenged people often have to disable JavaScript on websites because their interfaces are less accessible to assistive technologies like screen readers or braille terminals than the JavaScript-less alternative. SciLife was programmed following the rules of unobtrusive Ajax scripting. Try it yourself: turn off JavaScript in your browser and you will see that our platform works without any problems. JavaScript helps on top off our main apllication to enrich your web experience, but our basic functionalities do not depend on it. Thus, SciLife is one of the few truly unobtrusive Web 2.0 platforms, making life for people with disabilities easier. Because we care.
